As I related the previous story to a workmate (who does not read my blog - shame on her) Becky said something about having to separate my laundry into loads, and the time it would take, etc. So I told her the Hernandez family method of laundry sorting. We don't sort by lights, darks and whites. We sort by room. Mattea's laundry. The boys' laundry. And Theresa and my laundry. Towels, napkins, sheets, etc. just get tossed in the mix as they can. Becky asked if we just washed everything in cold water and I said no, we just washed it all together on warm.
That got me thinking. We can't be the only family that do the wash like this... can we? We just don't have time to sort by color, etc. Surely others do as we do. Don't you? Let us know via the comment capability on my blog. I moderate them to prevent spam posters, but I will publish all responses.

Well, I wash Aaron's clothes that way since I was told we should wash his clothes separately from ours. He doesn't have enough laundry to make separate loads and he's a baby, so it's no big deal if colors run (although they haven't since I wash his clothes in cold on delicate). But I do his clothes, towels, sheets, burp clothes, all in one load.
For our clothes, we do separate by darks and lights and delicates. And towels and sheets each get their own load. I used to do a light delicate load and a dark delicate load, but after Aaron was born, I started throwing it all in together to save time.
By the way, we have two hampers (one for lights, one for darks) and an extra laundry basket (for delicates) in our room. It would be a pain to sort laundry at wash time. Instead, we sort by putting clothing in the appropriate container when we get ready for bed each night. When a hamper gets full, we just dump the contents in the wash and put it back in the closet.
Towels get collected up, put in the wash, and returned to the towel racks later that day. Similar with sheets. We have spares in the closet, but don't usually bother to get them out.
Is that a thorough enough response for you?? I suppose I should have suggested duct tape in there somewhere. And you really should have a separate hamper for cheese.
I have washed stuff all together before, but it's been a while.
I taught T how to do laundry when she was 10. I taught her to sort by colors and fabrics but I never, ever told her not to wash cheese or any other food in the washer. Silly me!

I am picky about my wash! I'm not really sure where it came from, either. Perhaps my stint as a nanny in snobby Ardsley, NY? LOL
We have 3 hampers (really just 1 with 3 "nets"), so it's White, Darks, and Reds (which is red, orange, yellow, and some green and blue). Then there's the towels, light delicates, and dark delicates; the sheets & pillowcases; each blanket has its own setting; and then the tablecloth & napkins (really they're the "shop" towels! ROFL). When I am sick, the laundry does not get done, because DH has NO CLUE how to do it.
In fact, today I had to teach him how to add the liquid fabric softener (since we can't use dryer sheets) to the washer {our boys are allergic to most scents and dyes}.
It's a complicated matter. LOL
